The presence of Morbid matter is the cause of disease

Offering an explanation for the cause of diseases is an important central basic concept of naturopathy, and it does so on the principle that all illnesses are a result of the presence of morbid matter in the human body.

Every illness has a cause, and naturopathy seeks to understand this cause, and then to eliminate it, instead of seeking to eliminate or suppress symptoms. There is a certain unity between all diseases, their causes and their treatment. This relationship should be understood clearly, before any treatment is given. In particular, it is very important to understand the link between the cause of an illness and the symptoms that the illness displays. It is equally important not to isolate the symptoms and treat them separately from the patient.

Morbid Matter Theory

Naturopathy principles suggest that the cause of all diseases is the presence of contaminating materials in the human body, the so-called morbid matter. Diseases are not caused by bacteria or viruses. Rather, bacteria and viruses migrate and develop in areas of the body where morbid matter has accumulated. The morbid matter, in turn, only accumulates in the body because conditions arise in some areas of the body which favor an accumulation of such matter.

Conditions Which Favor Morbid Matter

When the body is in a high state of health and vitality, morbid matter will not accumulate in it. There are three types of conditions which will result in the accumulation of morbid matter in the body and therefore lead to disease.

  • A disturbance in the normal composition of blood.
  • A disturbance in the normal functions of lymph.
  • A reduction in the level of the vitality of the individual.

Another way of looking at it is to say that the presence of morbid matter creates an abnormal composition of blood, an abnormal composition of the lymph and a reduction of the vitality of the body. Whichever way you understand it, the removal of morbid matter is the one necessary condition for curing the disease that results from its presence.

What Does Having A Disease Mean?

In some approaches to naturopathy, diseases are the expression of a natural effort to heal the body. Acute diseases are viewed as warning signs for the presence of morbid matter, and therefore a friendly force. Symptoms of disease are warnings requiring that the body cleanses itself. Under this approach, the development of chronic illnesses is seen as evidence of an attempt to suppress the friendly warning signs, or as an outcome of wrongful treatment of those signs.

Since the presence of morbid matter is responsible for diseases, the body will be kept free of disease simply by not allowing such matter to accumulate. This is can achieved mainly by maintaining everyday health and fitness, by eating well and keeping fit.
